Our RYA-recognised Sea School is small and friendly, with first class facilities, dedicated and professional instructors and a well-equipped and carefully-maintained set of training craft.  Our courses start and finish in the lovely port of Fowey, on the scenic south east Cornish coast. With the smuggler’s haven of Polperro and the busy fishing village of Mevagissey used for training voyages, and the iconic Gribbin Head daymark and the Plymouth Dockyard Admiralty measured mile in our patch,  we think we have one of the loveliest training areas you could find.

In November 2017 Dan Lovell took over Fowey Maritime Centre and since then has been striving to expand, adding new activities to suit all ages.  These include, Coastal Tours, Snorkel trips and Wakeboarding and Waterskiing. Dan is also excited to be working in partnership with Sound Diving in Plymouth, offering Shark Diving, Free Diving and Scuba Diving courses.

We are a growing RYA Sea School and offer an increasing range of RYA Powerboat, Motor Cruiser and Shorebased courses from beginner to more advanced levels.  We are passionate about boating and can always offer advice and bespoke training as required to clients.  We also offer skippered charter events and trips in our commercially-coded vessels.

DANIEL LOVELL - moved to Cornwall from Lancashire in 2016. Studied outdoor recreation at llandrillo college north Wales. Became a BASI qualified ski instructor and worked in Italy and the mountains for 8 years. Passionate about the water, the move to Cornwall was a natural fit.

With encouragement from friends and family, Dan took over Fowey Maritime Centre in 2017.

In his free time Dan loves to surf, go boating and generally anything to do with the ocean with his daughter Evelyn and wired haired pointer Hildi!

JAN ZIOLO - Born in Glasgow but raised in Liverpool, Jan went to sea after university as an Engineer Officer on large merchant vessels, with the Blue Star Line and P&O Cruises.  He joined the Royal Navy after that, serving as a Marine Engineer in the Submarine Service, as a Staff Officer at the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, and as a Submarine Escape and Rescue Instructor at the Submarine Escape Training Tank in Gosport.

His small boat experience started with a ship’s lifeboat course on the River Clyde, before completing his Powerboat Level 2 on the River Mersey and getting introduced to his first RHIB.  Since then, he has crewed for both independent inshore rescue and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, and has crewed, skippered and instructed on a range of small fast boats including parachute-droppable ‘Medium Inflatable Boats’ with the Royal Navy Submarine Parachute Assistance Group (SPAG), dive boats and commercial charters.

Currently, Jan works as volunteer crew for Refugee Rescue, on their ex-RNLI RHIB in the Aegean, British Divers Marine Life Rescue and Fathoms Free.  He is also a multi-agency diving instructor.

Jan is Fowey Maritime Centre’s lead instructor on the Power and Motor Cruiser schemes.  He holds RYA Advanced Powerboat instructor and Cruising instructor (Power) certification and is a Master (200 Tonne Vessels).
